HEIDELBERG, PA – A man was shot and killed early Saturday morning after charging police officers with a knife during a tense confrontation in the 1700 block of Washington Street, according to Allegheny County Police.

Authorities said the incident began around midnight when 9-1-1 dispatchers received a call from a man claiming to be armed and threatening to harm himself and others. When officers from Heidelberg and neighboring Scott Township arrived, they found the man outside a residence holding a knife.

Preliminary reports indicate officers repeatedly ordered the man to drop the weapon. One Heidelberg officer deployed a Taser, but police say the man continued advancing toward them. A Scott Township officer then fired multiple shots, striking the man.

The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of family. No officers were injured during the incident.

Allegheny County detectives leading investigation

The Allegheny County Police Department’s Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation, reviewing body-worn camera footage and interviewing witnesses as part of standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

Officials have not said how many rounds were fired or how close the man was to officers when he was shot. The investigation remains active, and findings will be forwarded to the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office for review.
