May 3, 2025

WOODLAND PARK, N.J. — Anglers of all ages gather this morning at Barbour’s Pond in Garret Mountain Reservation for the 5th Annual Passaic County Fishing Derby, hosted by the Passaic County Parks & Recreation office in partnership with the Clifton Recreation Department and GoGo Gomez for Kids & Family.

The derby runs from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., with participants asked to arrive by 6:45 a.m. The last eligible fish must be caught and presented by 9:45 a.m. Awards will be given for the largest fish and the most fish caught in each of seven age and gender-based categories.

The event welcomes fishers in competition groups ranging from Junior (ages 5–8), Senior (ages 9–13), and Teen (ages 14–17) to an open Adult division for participants 18 and older. All fishing must be done by hook, with no nets permitted, and fish must be hooked in the mouth to qualify for judging.

“Final fish must be caught by 9:45 a.m.,” officials emphasized in the event guidelines.

Participants are required to bring their own fishing gear, and all competitors must have registered in advance. On-site registration is not allowed.

Families compete for trophies in early-morning outdoor tradition

The derby takes place at one of Passaic County’s most scenic locations, offering a community-centered morning of fishing, recreation, and family engagement at Barbour’s Pond.

Now in its fifth year, the derby has become a local tradition, offering young anglers a chance to compete, build skills, and enjoy the outdoors alongside their families. Organizers expect strong turnout again this year, with early arrivals already lining the pond before dawn.

While the event emphasizes friendly competition, it also provides opportunities for community bonding and environmental appreciation within the park’s natural setting.

The event concludes promptly at 10 a.m. with awards distributed shortly thereafter.

Rod and reel in hand, families hit the shore at Garret Mountain today for Passaic County’s annual fishing face-off.
