Locked Up New Jersey Privately Owned Beaches Forced to Reopen by State Officials

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ — Public access to Point Pleasant Beach via Jenkinson’s Pavilion has been restored after a month-long closure prompted by a notice from New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

The news of the reopened gates was confirmed by Mayor Paul Kanitra, who made the announcement on social media this Saturday. Visitors can now enter the beach through the main pavilion gate, the inlet pavilion gate, and the Forman Avenue entryway.

The DEP had cautioned the operators of Jenkinson’s Pavilion on September 19 that their locked gates contravened the terms of their Coastal Area Facility Review Act permit. The warning led to the lifting of the restrictions on the designated gates.

The DEP’s notice to Jenkinson’s followed a similar cautionary letter to the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association for limiting access to their beach on Sunday mornings during the warmer months.

Initially, Jenkinson’s Pavilion ceased public entry through its gates on September 6. This closure happened concurrently with the end of the lifeguard season, leaving only the municipal Maryland Avenue beach open for public use.
