Maine Man Who Identifies as a Woman Running for U.S. Senate Says He Would Never Lie or Deceive

AUGUSTA, Maine – Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Ashley Webb is receiving widespread attention on social media after a campaign interview in which the candidate was asked what qualifications they have to serve in the U.S. Senate.

The clip has circulated widely online, with critics and supporters offering sharply different reactions as Democrats look to fill an open Senate seat previously sought by Graham Platner.

Candidate cites prior campaigns and creative work

When asked about qualifications for the Senate, Webb responded by pointing to previous runs for office and personal accomplishments.

“I ran for office several times, didn’t win… I’m a songwriter… and I write my own books,” Webb said.

In another portion of the interview, Webb said transparency would be a priority if elected.

“My transparency—I wouldn’t lie to people or deceive people like we’re being deceived right now,” Webb said.

Webb also described entering politics out of frustration with the current political climate.

“I’m just an angry citizen… I would be an angry senator. I would be their worst nightmare,” Webb said.

Interview gains traction online

The interview quickly spread across social media platforms, where users debated Webb’s comments and qualifications for federal office. Many conservative commentators criticized the response, while others argued the clip reflected voter frustration with career politicians.

The campaign has not indicated whether additional context from the interview will be released.

Trans Rights

When speaking about the trans community, Mr. Webb said, “We’re being dehumanized. They say that we want to hurt people. I don’t want to hurt anybody, I just want to use the bathroom.”

Why it matters

As campaigns increasingly play out on social media, short interview clips can rapidly shape public perception of candidates. Viral moments often become focal points in competitive races, regardless of whether they reflect a candidate’s broader platform or policy positions.
