ALLENTOWN, Pa. – An early morning report of an active shooter prompted a large police response in Allentown after officers responded to reports of a man firing a handgun outside a residence before hearing additional gunshots from inside the home.

According to the Allentown Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 1:30 a.m. Sunday to the 400 block of North 8th Street for reports of a male actively shooting a handgun outside.

When officers arrived, police said the suspect had gone inside the residence, where officers heard additional gunfire.

Perimeter established before suspect surrendered

Authorities immediately established a perimeter around the residence as officers worked to safely resolve the incident.

Police said the suspect, identified as Andrew Fata, 31, was taken into custody without incident.

“There were no injuries,” the department said in its news release.

Fata has been charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, simple assault, and reckless endangerment.

Police have not released additional information about what led to the shooting or whether the gunfire struck any nearby homes or property.

As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and Fata is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police said no further information is being released at this time.
