CALLAWAY, MD – The Maryland State Police are investigating the death of Joseph Andrew Murrin, 53, after his body was discovered at the bottom of a well near his home in St. Mary’s County.

Murrin was reported missing by his family on August 2, to the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack.

A search involving police, firefighters, and family members ensued, leading to the discovery of Murrin’s body in a 30-foot-deep well adjacent to his residence on August 3. A recovery operation was launched the following day, with firefighters and technical rescue specialists successfully retrieving the body on Sunday afternoon.

The recovery involved multiple agencies, including the Leonardtown Barrack troopers, the St. Mary’s County Volunteer Fire Service, and the Montgomery County Fire Department Urban Search and Rescue Team, among others. Murrin’s body has been transported to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing, with Maryland State Police crime scene technicians processing the scene for evidence. Additional support is provided by the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and the St. Mary’s County Office of the State’s Attorney to assist in the criminal investigation.
