Maryland Lottery Newbie Scores Big with $50K Win

Catonsville man wins $50,000 on first-ever Maryland Lottery scratch-off purchase

BALTIMORE, Md. – A first-time Maryland Lottery player from Catonsville turned a spontaneous decision into a $50,000 windfall after purchasing a $5 Mosaic Money scratch-off ticket, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency announced, highlighting a rare beginner’s win that underscores continued strong participation in instant games.

The winning ticket was purchased at Liberty Shell, located at 8200 Liberty Road in Milford Mill, Baltimore County, after the man witnessed another customer cash in a sizable prize. According to Maryland Lottery officials, that customer handed him $5, which he used to buy the ticket that ultimately delivered the top prize.

First-time player scores unexpected windfall

The Catonsville resident, who described himself as a lottery skeptic, said the purchase was originally intended as a small gesture for his wife, who regularly encourages him to play.

“I bought the ticket for my wife,” he told Maryland Lottery officials.

Later that evening, the couple scratched the ticket together at home and quickly realized they had won one of the game’s top prizes.

“I was like, ‘What is this?’” the winner said.

He later claimed the prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore, accompanied by his wife, whom he referred to as his “lucky charm.” The couple said the winnings will go toward a down payment on a home.

Scratch-off game details and remaining prizes

The Mosaic Money scratch-off is a $5 instant ticket game introduced in March 2025. The game launched with eight top prizes of $50,000, and following this win, three top prizes remain unclaimed, according to lottery officials.

Retailers that sell winning tickets receive a commission, with Liberty Shell earning a $500 bonus for selling the $50,000 ticket. Such wins often drive increased foot traffic to local stores and reinforce the popularity of scratch-off games, which continue to be a major revenue driver for state lotteries.

The winner indicated he does not plan to continue playing, calling the experience a “miracle blessing” and saying he is “one and done” after the unexpected payout.

Broader trend in instant ticket wins

Maryland Lottery officials note that scratch-off games remain among the most accessible and widely played lottery products, frequently producing mid-tier wins like $50,000 across the state. These games contribute significantly to lottery revenue, which supports education, public health, and other state programs.
