Maryland veteran turns $91 into more than $60K on Lottery bet

A Windsor Mill veteran tried a new strategy on Maryland Lottery Racetrax and watched a modest wager explode into a five-figure payday

Baltimore, MD — A Windsor Mill man who only recently started playing Maryland Lottery Racetrax turned a $91 wager into a $60,428.10 prize after taking a chance on long-shot horses and hitting a winning combination.

The Baltimore County resident, who claimed his prize under the nickname “Vietnam Veteran,” collected $60,428.10 after placing a 10-cent Superfecta boxed bet on horses numbered 9, 10, 11 and 12.

The winning play came on June 15 and covered 20 consecutive races.

Before discovering Racetrax, the retired government worker primarily played Pick 3 and Pick 4 games. He said he became interested after watching other players participate in the computer-animated horse racing game.

At first, he focused on lower-numbered horses and won smaller prizes. Then another player suggested trying higher-numbered horses, which offer larger payouts but lower odds of winning.

The advice paid off immediately.

According to the winner, the first time he played the higher-numbered horses, he hit the winning combination worth $60,428.10.

The veteran said he plans to use part of the winnings to purchase a vehicle.

Lottery officials noted that another Vietnam veteran recently claimed a significant prize in Maryland, with a Baltimore player winning $57,777 on a Lucky 7s Tripler scratch-off.

The winning Racetrax ticket was purchased at Billiard Plus, located at 8140 Liberty Road in Windsor Mill.

The retailer will receive a bonus of $604.28 for selling the winning ticket.

Racetrax is a Maryland Lottery game that features computer-animated horse races and allows players to wager on various race outcomes and horse combinations.
