Meghan McCain is not holding back when it comes to Vice President Kamala Harris. During a recent interview with Mark Halperin, McCain called out Harris for what she claims is a made-up story about her late father, Senator John McCain, allegedly telling Harris that she would “make a great senator.”
Harris recently told a crowd about her positive interactions with McCain, sharing a story that apparently painted him as a big supporter. But according to Meghan, that’s not how it went down—at all. In the interview, McCain sharply responded, “I remember what he actually said about Harris in private,” emphasizing that the version Harris is now telling doesn’t align with the real John McCain. Meghan even recalled a specific dinner party where McCain allegedly made his true feelings known.
McCain didn’t hold back on criticizing Harris’s timing, either, pointing out that this story just so happens to come out 24 days before a critical election in Arizona, where Harris and Democrats have been struggling with independent voters. Meghan didn’t mince words about the tactic, saying, “politicians are going to politician,” and implying that Harris’s sudden need to share this tale seems more about political survival than a genuine memory.
In classic Meghan McCain fashion, she also took a broader swipe at politicians from both sides of the aisle, commenting on how people who were often the most hostile toward her father during his life are now portraying him as a saint in his death. Her frustration was palpable, especially as she’s seen John McCain’s legacy be used in ways she feels are disrespectful and self-serving.
The tension here between McCain and Harris only adds more fire to the complex relationships politicians had—and continue to have—with the late senator.
