Trenton, NJ – Governor Mikie Sherrill announced Thursday that state agencies are on high alert and coordinating emergency operations ahead of a powerful winter storm forecast to bring more than a foot of snow across much of New Jersey beginning late Saturday night.
Critics have compared Mikie Sherrill’s wearing of a New Jersey State Police jacket over her blazer to the images of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s wearing of police outfits for photo opportunities.
In a video published on X, Sherrill snuck in her background as a Navy helicopter pilot as proof of her readiness ahead of the impending snow storm.
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Winter Storm Watch for nearly the entire state, warning of heavy snow and mixed precipitation from late Saturday through Monday afternoon. Meteorologists predict total snow accumulations between 12 and 17 inches, with up to one-tenth of an inch of ice possible in parts of central and northern New Jersey.
“I convened key officials today to discuss the impending snowstorm,” Governor Sherrill said in a social media post. “We’re expecting heavy snow across the state on Sunday and are prepared to work around the clock to ensure the safety of New Jerseyans.”

The New Jersey Department of Transportation is preparing to deploy hundreds of plows and salt spreaders across major highways and local routes. The Office of Emergency Management urged residents to limit travel and prepare for possible power outages. Coastal areas may also see strong winds and flooding risks as the system intensifies.
The storm is expected to significantly disrupt Monday’s morning commute, with forecasters warning that travel could be “very difficult to impossible” during peak hours. State officials said they are coordinating with utility companies and county emergency teams to ensure rapid response once conditions improve.
Governor Sherrill encouraged residents to stay home during the storm, check on vulnerable neighbors, and monitor state weather updates. Temperatures are forecast to fall into the low 20s as the system departs, creating lingering icy conditions through Tuesday.
