Montgomery Police Make Arrest in 23-Year-Old Murder Cold Case

June 18, 2024

GAITHERSBURG, MD — The Montgomery County Department of Police – Cold Case Section has successfully solved a 23-year-old homicide with the arrest of a suspect for the 2001 murder of Leslie Preer.

On May 2, 2001, Leslie Preer was found dead in her Chevy Chase home on the 4800 block of Drummond Ave. She was discovered after failing to appear at work. Initially responded to at approximately 11:47 a.m., the scene was quickly determined to be a homicide by investigating officers.

Advancements in DNA technology provided a breakthrough in the case. In September 2022, blood evidence initially collected at the crime scene was submitted for forensic genetic genealogical DNA analysis. This analysis eventually pointed to Eugene Teodor Gligor as a suspect.

On June 9, 2024, further DNA evidence obtained from Gligor confirmed his connection to the crime scene, leading to a match with the DNA initially recovered. Subsequently, an arrest warrant was issued on June 15, and Gligor, now 44 years old, was apprehended in Washington, DC, by the US Marshal’s Task Force on June 18.

Gligor faces charges of first-degree murder and is currently detained, pending the extradition process, with a detainer issued to ensure his transfer.
