Nearly 1,500 Jersey Central Power & Light customers remained without electricity Thursday, one week after powerful storms swept across New Jersey and left tens of thousands in the dark.

HOLMDEL, N.J. — More than 1,500 Jersey Central Power & Light customers were still without electricity Thursday, a week after severe thunderstorms ripped through New Jersey, toppling trees, damaging power lines and leaving widespread outages across the utility’s service area.

According to JCP&L’s latest outage data, 1,521 customers remained without power out of more than 1.15 million served statewide.

While utility crews have restored service to the vast majority of affected customers, hundreds of households continue to wait for electricity as repairs stretch into a second week.

Somerset County hardest hit

Somerset County continued to report the largest concentration of outages Thursday, with 737 customers still without power—nearly half of all remaining outages in JCP&L’s New Jersey service territory.

Morris County reported 350 customers without electricity, followed by Hunterdon County with 80.

The remaining counties reported comparatively few outages:

  • Ocean County: 20
  • Monmouth County: 36
  • Mercer County: 6
  • Essex County: 7
  • Middlesex County: 2
  • Burlington County: 0
  • Passaic County: 0

Overall, just 0.13% of JCP&L’s New Jersey customers remained without service.

Storm recovery enters second week

The outages stem from a series of powerful thunderstorms that swept across New Jersey beginning last Friday, bringing damaging winds that snapped utility poles, downed power lines and toppled trees onto electrical infrastructure.

At the height of the outages, tens of thousands of homes and businesses lost electricity as utility crews worked around the clock to restore service.

While restoration efforts have made significant progress, some customers have expressed frustration that repairs have taken several days, particularly in areas where crews must replace poles or repair extensive damage before power can safely be restored.

Utility continues restoration work

JCP&L has continued deploying line workers and contractors across its service territory to complete remaining repairs.

The utility advises customers to stay away from downed power lines and to report any new outages through its website or customer service hotline.

As restoration work continues, customers still without electricity are encouraged to monitor JCP&L’s outage map for updated restoration estimates.
