The veteran New Jersey cover band will bring hits spanning the 1970s through today to Shelter Cove Beach before a 9 p.m. fireworks show.

TOMS RIVER, N.J. – Toms River will turn Shelter Cove Beach into an outdoor concert venue Tuesday night when Mushmouth, a veteran New Jersey cover band with roots stretching back three decades, takes the stage for the township’s Summer Concert Series.

The free Aug. 25 concert begins at 7 p.m., followed by fireworks at 9 p.m., according to Toms River Township. Free shuttle transportation will be available from Toms River High School East, and concertgoers are encouraged to bring chairs, blankets and snacks.

But who exactly is Mushmouth? The band is far from a newcomer to the Jersey Shore circuit. Mushmouth traces its beginnings to Kearny in 1996 and has built a following playing clubs, beaches, municipal concerts and private events throughout New Jersey.

  • Mushmouth performs music from the 1970s, ’80s, ’90s and more recent decades.
  • Its repertoire ranges from Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel to Duran Duran, Foo Fighters, Green Day and Tom Petty.
  • Tuesday’s free Shelter Cove Beach concert starts at 7 p.m., with fireworks scheduled for 9 p.m.

Who Is Mushmouth?

Mushmouth bills itself as a high-energy New Jersey cover band rather than an act devoted to one particular artist or genre. Its shows mix major hits with one-hit wonders and less obvious selections spanning several generations of popular music.

That makes the band’s songbook unusually broad. Its published artist list includes ABBA, The Beatles, Bee Gees, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, The Cars, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Cure, Duran Duran, Eagles, Elton John, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Led Zeppelin, Neil Diamond, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, The Ramones, Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, Tom Petty, U2, Van Morrison and Weezer.

There are also plenty of songs outside straight-ahead rock. Mushmouth lists Donna Summer, KC and the Sunshine Band, Glen Campbell, Eric Church and Wild Cherry among the artists represented in its repertoire.

The band’s current website identifies Billy Gallacher on lead vocals, Tony Matos on keyboards and backup vocals, Bob Docherty on drums, Kelli Bruno on vocals and multiple instruments, Doug Edwards on lead guitar and backup vocals, and Eric Ahern on bass and backup vocals.

Gallacher is a major part of the group’s stage identity. Mushmouth describes its frontman as an energetic performer drawing inspiration from the showmanship of artists including Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, James Brown and David Byrne.

The band has also played some high-profile events over its long run. Its website lists appearances connected with Major League Soccer All-Star celebrations, the New Jersey Devils, Disney World and Arrowhead Stadium, among other corporate and special events.

Mushmouth Is a Familiar Name at the Jersey Shore

Mushmouth has become a regular presence at Shore venues rather than a band appearing in Toms River for a one-off municipal show.

Its 2026 schedule has included performances at Martell’s Tiki Bar in Point Pleasant Beach, the Beachcomber in Seaside Heights, Jenkinson’s in Point Pleasant Beach and Water Street in Toms River, along with other New Jersey venues.

The band has developed enough of a following that longtime fans have their own nickname — “Mush Heads.” According to Mushmouth, that fan base began around the band’s Kearny roots in 1996 before expanding toward the Jersey Shore and elsewhere in New Jersey.

Tuesday’s show is being presented by Mayor Daniel Rodrick and the Toms River Recreation Department at Shelter Cove Beach.

The township’s event flyer promises “hits from the 70s, 80s, 90s & beyond,” matching the broad mix that has become Mushmouth’s calling card.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, with fireworks scheduled for 9 p.m. Admission is free, and free shuttles will run from Toms River High School East.
