TRENTON, NJ – New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced Friday that his office has blocked another round of cuts to AmeriCorps, preserving more than $184 million in funding for service programs nationwide.
The victory comes after the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) moved to withhold AmeriCorps funds despite a June court order that already restored $400 million previously cut. Platkin, working with a coalition of state attorneys general, challenged the move, filing an amended lawsuit and motion for injunction earlier this summer.
Rather than oppose the states’ motion in court, federal officials agreed this week to release the full amount of withheld funding. The money will now flow to AmeriCorps programs across the country, including New Jersey initiatives that support addiction recovery, English language learning, special education mentoring, environmental work, and disaster relief.
“When the Trump Administration targeted AmeriCorps and hurt communities across our state, we vowed to fight back, and today we have won,” Platkin said. “This funding ensures AmeriCorps volunteers can continue their critical responsibilities at no cost to New Jersey residents.”
AmeriCorps supports national and state volunteer programs by placing members in community organizations that address urgent local needs. Officials said today’s agreement protects thousands of volunteers and the communities they serve.
