New Jersey gubernatorial candidate and Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill recently found herself in a historical hiccup. In a campaign statement, she mentioned that her grandfather flew B-52 bombers during World War II.
However, the B-52 Stratofortress didn’t take to the skies until 1955, well after the war ended.
“My grandfather, Bill, was a B-52 bomber pilot in WWII and flew missions over occupied France. He was shot down and rescued by the Free French. After hearing his stories as a kid, it became my dream to fly, just like him,” she posted on X.
Social media users were quick to point out the discrepancy, leading to a flurry of comments and memes. Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot, promptly corrected herself, clarifying that her grandfather piloted B-24 bombers during the war. She attributed the mix-up to a long and rough day.
While some critics questioned how a military veteran could make such an error, others were more understanding, acknowledging that even seasoned professionals can have off days. Sherrill’s swift correction and transparency may help her navigate this minor turbulence as she continues her campaign.
“Sorry guys, a typo after a long day! He was a B-24 pilot and his service continues to inspire me every day,” she clarified.
