NEW JERSEY — Democratic congressional candidate Rebecca Bennett is drawing attention after posting a video describing what she calls the annual childcare “dead zone,” the two-week period between the end of summer camp and the beginning of the school year when many working parents must juggle full-time jobs without regular childcare.
“How are you surviving?” Bennett asked her followers grappling with raising their own children for a brief two week period of summer.
Bennett, who is challenging Republican Congressman Tom Kean Jr. in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, used the social media post to describe her own family’s experience while asking followers how they handle the transition.
Bennett Calls Two-Week Gap the “Dead Zone”
“Hello and welcome to the dead zone,” Bennett said at the start of the video. “The dead zone is the two weeks after camp is done and when school goes back where parents are just being asked to take care of their kids with no childcare and also do their full-time jobs.”
Bennett is also busy traveling across the state in her campaign for Congress, but for two weeks, is figuring out she we will care for her children, who she said just ended camp.
Bennett explained that her daughter’s school ended last week while classes will not resume until Sept. 8, leaving what she described as two weeks without organized childcare.
“I would love to hear how you guys manage this time, what you guys do,” Bennett said. “If you guys have any tips or tricks, please drop them in the comments.”

“I think this is why it’s so important that we have moms and parents in office that understand these challenges and are going to have solutions to make sure that we can actually raise our kids, have our careers, and do all the things we want to do for our life,” she said.
The period between the end of summer camps and the first day of school has long presented scheduling challenges for many working families across New Jersey and the country. Historically, families made due. They planned vacations, had grandparents and other relatives spend quality time with their children or enrolled them in other daytime activities.
Parents often rely on vacation time, relatives, babysitters, flexible work schedules, additional camp programs, or other childcare arrangements to bridge the gap before schools reopen. It’s a great time to enjoy the end of summer with your own children.
