League of Women Voters says candidate sought role in choosing moderator, violating nonpartisan policy.
Morristown, NJ – A planned congressional debate in New Jersey’s 11th District has collapsed after Democratic candidate Analilia Mejia declined to participate, citing concerns over moderator diversity, while organizers say her campaign sought influence over the selection process in a way they could not allow.
The League of Women Voters of New Jersey, which organized the proposed general election debate, said it was asked by one campaign to provide a list of potential moderators for approval—something the group says conflicts with its nonpartisan standards.
In a statement, the League said, “We were asked to provide a campaign with a list of potential moderators for approval. This is a request that the League of Women Voters cannot accommodate. Our nonpartisan stance does not permit a candidate to influence the selection of the moderator.”
The organization added that the planned moderator “was a League trained professional and a person of color,” and that questions would have come directly from voters in the district.

Candidates offer sharply different accounts
Mejia, in a public statement, said her request centered on ensuring diversity in the debate process, not control over it.
“As a candidate seeking to represent a district in which over a third of constituents are people of color, I asked the League to commit to diversity among their proposed moderators,” Mejia said. “Sadly, they were unable to commit.”
She added, “I do not believe neutrality and diversity are ever in opposition.”
Republican candidate Joe Hathaway responded by signaling he was willing to participate under any format.
“We should always put the voters of NJ-11 first. They deserve the chance to hear directly from us,” Hathaway said. “If your concern is the format then you can choose the moderators, time, and location.”
Debate absence leaves voters without forum
The canceled debate removes a potential opportunity for voters in the district to hear directly from both candidates ahead of the election. The League indicated the event was designed to include community-driven questions and reflect a broad cross-section of constituents.
It remains unclear whether an alternative debate will be scheduled.
