TRENTON, NJ – A new legislative bill, S1494, has been introduced in the New Jersey Legislature to establish a nine-member task force aimed at addressing the health care needs of the LGBTQI community. Sponsored for the 2022-2023 session, this initiative seeks to enhance the quality and accessibility of health care services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, and intersex individuals across the state.
The task force, to be formed within the Department of Health (DOH), will be tasked with a comprehensive review and assessment of existing health care services and policies affecting the LGBTQI community. Its objectives include examining state and federal policies related to LGBTQI health care, assessing the current provision and quality of services, evaluating barriers to access, and reviewing educational curricula in medical and public health schools regarding LGBTQI health care needs.
Members of the task force will represent a broad spectrum of expertise and perspectives, including the Commissioner of Health or a designee, representatives from Garden State Equality, the New Jersey Hospital Association, a federally qualified health center, and members of the LGBTQI community itself. Additional appointments will be made by legislative leaders, ensuring a diverse and inclusive membership.
The task force is expected to issue a report to the Governor and Legislature within one year of its formation, detailing its findings, recommendations, and proposed actions to improve LGBTQI health care services. This report aims to lay the groundwork for future policy and service enhancements, making health care more inclusive and accessible for all New Jersey residents.
Upon completion of its report, the task force will conclude its activities, leaving a lasting impact on the state’s approach to LGBTQI health care and policy development.
