New Jersey man accused of spitting on cops after Main Street domestic violence arrest
HACKENSACK, NJ — A New Jersey man arrested during a domestic violence incident in Hackensack is now accused of spitting on police officers, damaging property and kicking apart a patrol car while in custody, authorities said.
Hackensack police responded Monday, May 4, at about 1:32 a.m. to a noise complaint on Main Street.
When officers arrived, they found four men arguing on a sidewalk, according to police.
Investigators said 34-year-old Rashaun A. Hawes of Leesburg entered a parked vehicle during the confrontation and repeatedly punched another man inside the car.
Police said the victim was related to Hawes.
Officers immediately took Hawes into custody.
Authorities said the incident escalated further after Hawes arrived at police headquarters.
Police accused Hawes of spitting on officers, kicking a computer desk, resisting placement inside a holding cell and refusing to be fingerprinted.
While being transported to jail, investigators said Hawes repeatedly kicked the inside of the police vehicle and damaged an interior door panel.
Hawes was charged with simple assault, aggravated assault on a police officer by spitting, criminal mischief and refusing to be fingerprinted.
He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a first court appearance in Hackensack.
