New jersey traffic impacted by overnight snow and sleet

TRENTON, N.J. — Winter weather has caused widespread traffic disruptions across New Jersey on Wednesday, with snow and ice leading to speed restrictions, accidents, and delays on major roadways.

The New Jersey Turnpike has a 45 mph speed limit in both directions from the Delaware Memorial Bridge in Pennsville Township to north of Interchange 3 in Barrington due to salting operations. The Garden State Parkway has similar restrictions, with plowing and salting underway between Cape May and Egg Harbor Township, where speeds are reduced to 35 mph.

Several crashes have been reported, including a collision on NJ 4 eastbound at Mackay Avenue in Paramus, which has closed one right lane. Another crash with injuries on NJ 4 westbound near Spring Valley Road has also led to lane closures. A vehicle spinout on the Garden State Parkway northbound at Exit 132 in Woodbridge Township is blocking the right shoulder.

A major road closure is in place on I-80 eastbound at Exit 34 in Wharton due to a sinkhole, forcing all lanes to be detoured. Downed wires and a utility pole on US 22 in Readington Township have also shut down both directions of the highway.

Delays are building at major crossings into New York, with 30-minute travel times reported on both levels of the George Washington Bridge, and 20-minute delays at the Lincoln Tunnel.

Officials are urging drivers to use caution as road conditions remain hazardous amid ongoing snow and ice removal efforts.
