New Rochelle police rescue teen stranded on rocks along Long Island Sound

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – A 17-year-old boy was rescued Sunday evening after slipping on rocks along the shoreline at Davenport Park and becoming stranded just above the Long Island Sound, according to the New Rochelle Police Department.

Police said the emergency call came in around 5:15 p.m. on December 14, when the teenager’s companion reported that he had fallen near the water’s edge and could not climb back up due to a back injury.

Members of the department’s Critical Incident Unit responded within minutes, locating the teen on the rocks below the embankment. Officers used rope rescue equipment to safely extract him and bring him back to stable ground without further injury.

The teenager was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation of what authorities described as a minor back injury.

Police officials reminded residents to exercise caution around rocky waterfront areas, particularly during evening hours or wet conditions, noting that “falls can occur quickly and rescue access can be difficult.”

No additional details were released about the teenager’s identity in order to protect his privacy.
