New York Man Sentenced to 59 Months for Fentanyl Distribution Conspiracy

June 20, 2024

Camden, NJ – Edgar Jesus Avila Alvarado, 46, of the Bronx, New York, was sentenced to 59 months in prison for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl, announced U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.

Avila Alvarado had previously pleaded guilty before Chief U.S. District Judge Renée Marie Bumb to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute a mixture and substance containing fentanyl. The sentence was imposed today in Camden federal court by Judge Bumb.

In July 2022, law enforcement observed Avila Alvarado exiting a New York City residence carrying a duffle bag, which he placed in a vehicle. After stopping the vehicle, law enforcement recovered approximately three kilograms of fentanyl from the bag and determined that Avila Alvarado was en route to New Jersey to distribute the substance. Additionally, law enforcement discovered another four kilograms of fentanyl at his New York City residence. In total, nearly 7.4 kilograms of fentanyl were recovered from Avila Alvarado.

Judge Bumb also sentenced Avila Alvarado to three years of supervised release following his prison term.
