Violent and property crimes rose in New York state in 2022, based on preliminary data revealed Tuesday by Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul.
The state saw a roughly 21% overall increase in reported index crimes compared to 2021, including murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft, the data shows. Reported murders and rapes declined by about 11% and 5% respectively, but each of the other specified offenses increased, resulting in a 10% cumulative rise in those violent crimes and a 24% index property crime spike.
In New York City, the reported violent crimes surged by about 15%, while specified property crimes went up by around 32%, according to the data. Hochul published the statistics and laid out her fiscal year 2024 executive budget proposal in a speech Tuesday, calling for $31.1 million to fund crime reduction, youth justice and gang prevention programs and $52 million to help the county district attorneys’ offices prosecute cases.
“Protecting New Yorkers is my number one priority, which is why my budget proposal includes record-level investments and proven strategies to ensure my administration can do just that,” Hochul said. “We are working overtime to fight crime across our state and are moving in the right direction but won’t stop until every New Yorker can live in safety.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams had said in January that it was a “wise strategy” for local shop owners to hire private security to fight back against crime, adding, “People must feel safe.” The city was plagued by a roughly 26% reported burglary surge from 2021 to 2022, according to the data.
