Newark man flees police on stolen motorcycle

NEWARK, NJ — Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for a Newark man who allegedly fled from police on a stolen motorcycle after briefly cooperating during a traffic stop, officials said.

Motorcycle pursuit follows brief traffic stop

Elijah P. Oliver, 31, was observed by a police officer riding a motorcycle in the 500 block of Elizabeth Avenue at around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, April 5. When Oliver stopped at a gas station on Frelinghuysen Avenue, the officer initiated a traffic stop and asked for identification.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., Oliver handed over a license, but fled the scene on the motorcycle while the officer was verifying the documents.

Police later determined the motorcycle had been reported stolen in Newark on April 3.

Public urged to assist with search

An arrest warrant has been issued for Oliver, who now faces charges of eluding and possession of stolen property. Authorities are asking for the public’s assistance in locating him.

“Anyone with information on Oliver’s whereabouts is urged to call the Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477),” Miranda said in a statement.

All tips provided to Crime Stoppers remain anonymous and may lead to a reward.
