Newark police precincts now host Amazon lockers for safer package deliveries

City partners with Amazon to reduce theft and provide secure delivery options at all precincts.

NEWARK, NJ – In a new effort to combat package thefts and enhance delivery safety across the city, the Newark Department of Public Safety announced that all Newark Police Precincts are now equipped with Amazon lockers, offering residents a secure alternative to home delivery.

The initiative allows customers to have their Amazon orders sent directly to police precinct locations, where they can retrieve packages using an emailed access code. Once a package is delivered, Amazon sends the customer a unique digital code, which must be entered at the locker’s terminal to open the designated compartment. Packages left unclaimed for more than three days will be removed by Amazon to make space for new deliveries, with full refunds automatically issued to customers for uncollected items.

The lockers are now operational at seven precincts citywide: the 2nd Precinct at 1 Lincoln Avenue (North Ward), 3rd Precinct at 649 Market Street (East Ward), 4th Precinct at 247 16th Avenue (Central Ward), 5th Precinct at 480 Clinton Avenue (South Ward), 6th Precinct at 491 Irvington Avenue (West Ward), 7th Precinct at 159 N. 10th Street (North Ward), and 9th/Metro Precinct at 22 Franklin Street (Central Ward).

City officials said the move provides residents with both convenience and peace of mind as online shopping surges during the holiday season. Newark has experienced an uptick in reported package thefts in recent years, a problem affecting cities nationwide. By locating Amazon lockers at police facilities, the department aims to deter theft and build community trust through accessibility and safety.

Safe access and simple process

Residents choosing this option can select a locker location during checkout on Amazon’s website or mobile app. Once delivered, the customer receives an email containing a six-digit code to retrieve the package. Each locker unit is accessible 24 hours a day, depending on precinct operating hours, allowing residents to pick up orders at their convenience.

Amazon’s partnership with the city marks part of a broader initiative to install lockers in public and high-traffic areas, reducing missed deliveries and preventing “porch piracy.” For Newark, the collaboration doubles as a community outreach opportunity, encouraging residents to visit local precincts and interact with officers in non-emergency settings.

Public encouraged to report suspicious activity

The Department of Public Safety also reminded residents to report any criminal activity or suspicious behavior. Anonymous tips can be submitted to the Newark Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477) or through the division’s official website at npd.newarkpublicsafety.org. Information leading to arrests may be eligible for cash rewards.

City leaders said the Amazon locker program will remain in place year-round and may expand based on usage and community feedback.
