Newark police seek suspect in south 19th street shooting over scooter dispute

NEWARK, N.J. — Newark police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect involved in an aggravated assault shooting that occurred Thursday morning in the city’s West Ward.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, officers responded around 10:50 a.m. on May 8 to a report of a shooting in progress on the 400 block of South 19th Street. Upon arrival, officers found a victim who was not physically injured but had been fired upon during an altercation.

Authorities said the shooting stemmed from an argument and physical fight over a scooter. During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly pulled a firearm and fired at the victim. A bullet struck an iPhone in the victim’s pocket, preventing injury. One bullet was recovered at the scene.

“The victim and another individual argued and fought over the victim’s scooter. That person drew a gun and fired at the victim,” the department posted on its official Facebook page.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. urged members of the public to help identify the suspect, whose image was captured and shared by authorities.

Police request public assistance through Crime Stoppers

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Newark Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). All tips are confidential and may be eligible for a reward.

No arrest has been reported in connection with the shooting.

The bullet struck a cellphone in the victim’s pocket during the confrontation on South 19th Street.
