JACKSON TOWNSHIP, NJ – The roar of a new era echoed through the gym this weekend as the Jackson Township High School Jaguars cheerleading team took the mat for the first time — marking the historic debut of a unified squad representing the township’s newly consolidated high school.
The new look followed a major restructuring by the Jackson Board of Education in 2025, which officially merged Jackson Memorial High School and Jackson Liberty High School into a single institution housed on the former Liberty campus. The new school, renamed Jackson Township High School, now competes under the Jaguars moniker.
The transition ended more than two decades of tradition tied to Jackson Liberty High School, originally opened in the mid-2000s and named to honor America’s enduring spirit in the post–September 11 era. The consolidation aimed to streamline district resources amid declining enrollment and rising operational costs, though it also stirred emotions among alumni and residents attached to the schools’ individual legacies.
Saturday’s cheer debut symbolized the blending of those traditions. Athletes from both former programs performed together for the first time, drawing loud applause and optimism for the team’s future. “History in the making,” one event organizer said after the performance. “Based on that routine, the future is real bright. Let’s go Jags!”
The newly formed Jaguars cheer team’s debut marked the first official competition appearance for Jackson Township High School since the district’s two long-standing schools became one.
