TRENTON, NJ – Hours after Governor Mikie Sherrill’s inaugural address and first-day executive actions, New Jersey Republican Party Chairwoman Christine Hanlon sharply criticized the new administration, accusing the governor of delivering a divisive speech instead of uniting residents behind solutions to the state’s ongoing affordability crisis.
Hanlon said Sherrill’s remarks, which included criticism of former President Donald Trump, were a missed opportunity to rally bipartisan support for lowering costs and restoring confidence in government. “At a time when leaders are expected to unify for the good of our state, Gov. Sherrill opted to attack President Trump,” Hanlon said in a statement released Monday evening. “It is ironic that just one year ago, she lashed out at President Trump for issuing Executive Orders on Day One. Now, her first action as Governor is to issue Executive Orders freezing ratepayers’ sky-high energy rates.”
The GOP chairwoman blamed eight years of Democratic control in Trenton for what she described as spiraling taxes, rising energy bills, and a growing budget burden on working families. She argued that the new administration’s policies are a continuation of the same approach that has strained household finances across the state.
“Trenton spent freely, promised everything, and sent the bill to working residents who are already stretched thin,” Hanlon said. “Many residents are now left uncertain about life in New Jersey going forward: will they expect more of the same — or worse?”
Despite her criticism, Hanlon pledged that Republicans would “work overtime” to advance what she called “common sense solutions” focused on affordability and restoring the American Dream for residents who have been priced out of the Garden State.
