CONCORD, NC – A late-night argument between two teenagers escalated into deadly violence on a quiet Concord street Monday, leaving a father dead and his teenage daughter wounded after he stepped in to stop an alleged assault inside their home. Police say the 17-year-old boyfriend opened fire during the confrontation, striking both the girl and her father.

Keshaun Tirrell Degraffenreid, 17, has been charged as an adult in connection with the shooting on Bedlington Drive Northwest, about 25 miles northeast of Charlotte. He faces charges including first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, misdemeanor domestic violence, and resisting officers. The victim, identified in court documents as 47-year-old Lester Jones, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Concord Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly after midnight “for a reported assault with injury,” arriving to find Jones and his 16-year-old daughter suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Escalation inside the home

Investigators say Degraffenreid and the girl “had an argument that escalated” and became physical. An arrest warrant states that Degraffenreid punched the girl in the face. As the situation unfolded, Jones intervened in an attempt to protect his daughter.

During that intervention, police allege Degraffenreid fired multiple shots. “The suspect fired multiple rounds during the incident, seriously injuring” the girl, authorities said. Emergency responders transported the teen to a nearby hospital; her condition has not been publicly updated.

Jones died at the scene from his injuries, according to police.

Arrest after foot chase

Following the shooting, officers located Degraffenreid on a nearby street. Police said he was taken into custody “after a brief foot chase,” bringing an end to the immediate search.

The case has drawn strong reactions from neighbors, who described shock at the violence. “A father made the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter to protect her, and a 17-year-old kid played a stupid game and decided to use violence,” neighbor Josh Elmore told local CBS affiliate WBTV.

Degraffenreid made his first court appearance Wednesday and is scheduled to return to court on June 18.
