North Carolina mother sentenced to decades after house fire kills three childrenA Greensboro case closes with a guilty plea and long prison term after fatal blaze
GREENSBORO, NC – A mother who admitted responsibility in a house fire that killed her three young children will spend decades behind bars, bringing a tragic case that shook a Greensboro neighborhood to a close. The fire, which broke out in the early morning hours at a home on Grimsley Street, left 1-year-old twins and a 4-year-old dead after they were trapped inside.
Brandi Sturdivant, 32, pleaded guilty this week to three counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to between 30 and 36 years in prison, according to reports. The Greensboro Police Department had charged her following the December 2022 fire.
Fire and unanswered questions
The fire began around 8 a.m. on Dec. 12, 2022, while the children were inside the home without an adult present. Authorities said Sturdivant later told them she had been using a stove in the living room to heat the house and believed it may have sparked the blaze.
Prosecutors said neighbors—not Sturdivant—called 911 and attempted to help. Responding officers found Sturdivant at the end of the street, where she was seen falling out of a car and crying.
First responders discovered the three children huddled together inside the burned home. Autopsy results determined they died from smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Investigation findings and witness accounts
Neighbors described Sturdivant in stark terms, with some referring to her as “the crazy lady next door,” according to reports. Authorities also said she indicated she intended to harm herself.
Investigators later determined the oven was not the source of the fire, despite reports it had been turned up to 500 degrees before Sturdivant left the home. The exact cause of the blaze could not be determined, though officials noted that a gasoline can was found on the front stoop.
The sentencing marks the end of a case that drew attention across the region, centered on how the fire began and why the children were left alone inside.
