Maryland mother gets 50 years after shooting daughter, urging her to lie

SEAT PLEASANT, MD – A Prince George’s County woman will spend the next five decades in prison after shooting her teenage daughter in the neck during a domestic argument and later attempting to derail the case by urging the girl to mislead investigators. The sentence, handed down Friday, follows a jury conviction on multiple felony counts tied to the September 2024 shooting that left the 13-year-old hospitalized.

Talecka C. Brown, 34, was ordered to serve 50 years behind bars, according to court records. Prosecutors said the violence unfolded on Sept. 23, 2024, inside the family’s home in Seat Pleasant, just east of Washington, D.C., where Brown shot her daughter in the back of the neck.

Case details and initial claims

Brown called 911 after the shooting and initially told responding officers that a homeless person had shot the girl, according to reports. Investigators later determined the account was false. Prosecutors said Brown also urged her daughter to tell authorities that someone had broken into the home and opened fire.

Officials said that even as the girl was in “screeching pain,” Brown did not express concern about her daughter’s condition during the immediate aftermath. The child survived but required hospitalization for the gunshot wound.

The case intensified after Brown’s arrest, when prosecutors said she contacted the girl’s father from jail and left a message suggesting the charges could be avoided. In that voicemail, Brown said the case “will go away” if the victim refused to cooperate with law enforcement or appear in court. She also disputed the severity of the accusations, saying, “Attempted first-degree murder — come on, that’s not me,” according to prosecutors.

Conviction and sentencing

A jury convicted Brown in October of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree child abuse, first-degree assault, and use of a firearm by a felon to commit a violent crime, court records show. Jurors did not reach verdicts on additional counts, including second-degree attempted murder, second-degree child abuse, second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment.

Brown faced a potential life sentence on the attempted first-degree murder charge. The court ultimately imposed a 50-year term. Authorities have not indicated any changes to the victim’s condition since the incident.
