NYPD detectives say they were mistreated at Brooklyn hospital after line of duty injuries

BROOKLYN, NY – Two NYPD detectives seeking medical treatment at NYU Langone – Cobble Hill were allegedly met with disrespect and poor treatment from hospital staff after sustaining injuries during the arrest of a violent suspect, according to the Detectives’ Endowment Association (DEA). The incident has sparked outrage within the law enforcement community, raising questions about how first responders are treated when injured in the line of duty.

The DEA stated that the detectives, whose names were not immediately released, arrived at the emergency room last week after being hurt during a physical struggle with a suspect. Instead of receiving immediate professional care, they were reportedly confronted by administrators who, according to the union, displayed “rudeness, disrespect, and a lack of basic professional courtesy.”

“Let’s be clear about this — hospital staff refused to treat plainclothes NYPD detectives injured in the line of duty. Not only that, these officers were treated with contempt completely outside ethical bounds for medical personnel,” said NYC Councilwoman Vicky Paladino. “From what I understand, staff supposedly did this because they thought the NYPD officers might have been ‘ICE agents’ as if that is a valid excuse to refuse a patient. Let’s be very clear about something — when doctors and nurses and medical staff begin to refuse critical care over perceived political differences, we will have reached a breaking point in this country.”

DEA President Paul DiGiacomo condemned the alleged behavior, calling it “an outrage” that detectives risking their lives to protect New Yorkers would face such conditions while seeking medical attention. The union vowed to pursue all remedies to ensure its members are treated with dignity.

The hospital did not immediately issue a public statement in response to the allegations. The reported incident comes amid nurse strikes across the city over workplace safety and staffing issues, with tensions in some facilities already running high.

The DEA has launched an internal review of the matter and plans to raise concerns directly with NYU Langone administrators.
