NYPD Homicide Unit Takes Case After Body Found on Oak Street Bridge

August 6, 2024

YONKERS, NY – The investigation into a body found on the Oak Street bridge in Yonkers has been officially transferred to the New York City Police Department following initial findings by the Yonkers Police Department.

The discovery occurred just before 2:00 am on August 5, initially reported as a fire near the jurisdictional border with Mt. Vernon.

Westchester County Public Safety officers and the Mount Vernon Fire Department extinguished the fire and found a lifeless body in a shopping cart on the sidewalk. Yonkers Police, who were first on the scene, confirmed the body had been intentionally set on fire.

After an extensive on-site investigation by detectives from the Major Case Squad and Crime Scene Unit, evidence indicated that while the body was found and set ablaze within Yonkers, the actual homicide likely occurred elsewhere. This led to the determination that the New York City Police Department should take over as the primary investigative agency.

This case has been categorized as a homicide, and investigative efforts are continuing as the NYPD takes the lead in solving this crime.
