Ocean City Police mourn loss of retired K-9 Rocco after years of loyal service

OCEAN CITY, MD – The Ocean City Police Department is mourning the passing of retired K-9 Rocco, a decorated police dog who served the department and community with distinction alongside his handler, Corporal Sean McHugh.

Born in Poland on December 1, 2014, Rocco joined the Ocean City Police Department in 2016 after completing training at Shallow Creek Kennels. Certified by the North American Police Work Dog Association, he was skilled in narcotics detection, detention, and patrol duties.

During his seven-year career, Rocco contributed to numerous narcotics investigations and helped apprehend suspects during patrol operations. One of his most memorable cases, recalled by Corporal McHugh, involved tracking two robbery suspects to a hiding spot near the beach, where Rocco successfully located them still carrying stolen property.

Rocco retired from active duty on November 1, 2023. In retirement, he remained part of the McHugh family, enjoying simple pleasures such as chasing his Chuckit ball, taking long naps, and quietly persuading family members to share food.

The department described Rocco as more than a police dog — a trusted partner, loyal protector, and beloved family member whose service left a lasting mark on the Ocean City community.
