Ocean City Police Warn of Scam Using Fake Crash Story to Solicit Money

Ocean City police are warning residents and visitors about an individual allegedly using a fabricated story about a serious traffic crash to convince people to hand over cash.

The Ocean City Police Department has issued a scam alert after receiving reports of an individual approaching members of the public and requesting money under false pretenses.

According to police, the person claims that their mother was involved in a serious motor vehicle crash and that they need money for gas to travel to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Suspect reportedly uses names of local figures

Investigators said the individual has, in some cases, used the names of local politicians and other well-known community members to make the story appear more credible.

“The Ocean City Police Department has been made aware of an individual approaching people with a story that their mother was involved in a serious traffic crash and that they needs money for gas to travel to Shock Trauma to be with her,” the department said.

Police did not release a description of the individual but urged the public to remain vigilant when approached by anyone seeking financial assistance.

Police urge caution before donating

Authorities emphasized that while many people genuinely need help, residents and visitors should be cautious before giving money directly to strangers.

“We encourage everyone to be cautious when approached by individuals requesting financial assistance,” the department said. “Unfortunately, not every story is what it seems.”

Officials recommend that anyone wishing to support people in need consider donating through established charities or reputable organizations whenever possible.

Report suspicious activity

The department is asking anyone who encounters suspicious activity or believes they may have been targeted by the scam to contact police.

“If you encounter suspicious activity or believe you may have been the victim of a scam, please contact the Ocean City Police Department at 410-723-6610,” officials said.

Police thanked the community for remaining alert and helping share information that could prevent others from becoming victims.
