TOMS RIVER, NJ – Ocean County’s Republican Party is reeling after a crushing defeat in Tuesday’s gubernatorial primary, where the county GOP’s full-throated endorsement of Bill Spadea backfired spectacularly.
Spadea, a conservative radio host, lost to Jack Ciattarelli by a staggering 40 points, marking one of the worst election losses at the county level in recent memory.
At the center of the storm is George Gilmore, the controversial GOP chairman and convicted felon, whose leadership is now under intense scrutiny following a public vote of no confidence and growing internal strife.
Gilmore, who returned as Ocean County GOP chairman after a 2020 pardon by then-President Donald Trump for federal tax fraud convictions, has faced mounting criticism for his handling of the organization.
Once sentenced to a year and a day in prison for his crimes, Gilmore’s political comeback has been marred by a string of electoral failures and accusations of self-interest. Tuesday’s primary loss has only deepened the rift within the party, with local Republican clubs openly questioning his leadership.
The Ocean County GOP’s decision to fully endorse Spadea, a polarizing figure, was seen as a risky move orchestrated by Gilmore.
The gamble failed, and now the chairman is paying the price. Sources within the party say Gilmore’s meddling in municipal races—often backing candidates to run against those supported by local Republican clubs—has fueled infighting and eroded trust.
“George is more concerned with paying off his IRS liens and lining his own pockets than building a winning team,” one county GOP insider said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
He went on to say that Gilmore’s endorsement of Spadea was not made in the best interest of New Jersey, or even for the best candidate, but because Gilmore was on Spadea’s payroll. The candidate paid Gilmore through his PAC Elect Common Sense, thousands of dollars each month.
“Our county endorsements should not go to the highest bidder, year, after year, after year,” he added.
Since his return, Gilmore’s track record has been dismal.
Most of his major contested races have ended in defeat, and the Spadea debacle has only amplified calls for change.
With Gilmore up for re-election as chairman in just one year, party members are already mobilizing to challenge him. Local clubs, frustrated by what they see as his heavy-handed tactics and focus on personal gain, are discussing potential candidates to unseat him.
The fallout from Tuesday’s loss has left Ocean County’s GOP in shambles, with members openly debating the party’s direction.
“We need leadership that unites us and backs strong, local candidates, not someone who picks fights and pushes his own agenda,” said a member of a Toms River Republican club. “And definitely not a Republican chairman who also works for the Democrats.”
Others argue that Gilmore’s long-standing influence in the county makes him a formidable figure, despite his recent missteps.
Gilmore has not yet publicly commented on the election results or the vote of no confidence.
As the party grapples with its future, all eyes are on whether the embattled chairman can weather this latest storm—or if Ocean County’s GOP will demand new leadership to rebuild its fractured organization.
