CINCINNATI, OH – An Ohio woman convicted of violently assaulting a toddler while babysitting overnight has been sentenced to prison, closing a case that left a 1-year-old hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and a family reeling from betrayal.
Amanda Leigh Greger, 38, was sentenced in May to at least three and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to felonious assault in the attack on the daughter of her friend, Melissa Bilby. The assault occurred in November at a home in Goshen Township, part of the greater Cincinnati area, where Greger had been entrusted to care for the child while Bilby worked an overnight shift.
Court records show Greger also pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence. Additional charges, including child endangerment, were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
Injuries discovered after overnight shift
When Bilby returned home, she found Greger asleep in the same room as the child, wearing a hooded sweatshirt “covered in what appeared to be blood and vomit,” according to an affidavit. Investigators documented bloodstains “located throughout the room,” and noted that the child’s clothing had been washed but remained visibly stained.
“The clothing [the victim] had been wearing was found in the washing machine, washed but still visibly stained,” the affidavit states.
The child suffered severe injuries, including blood that was “seeping from [the] right eye” and a brain bleed. Medical staff placed the toddler in intensive care, where she was heavily sedated.
Family describes extent of injuries
A fundraising page created by the child’s aunt, Lindsay Bilby, detailed the extent of the injuries and the medical response after the child was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit.
“[The victim] was admitted to PICU with a brain bleed, bruised lungs, fluid along her spine, and fluid around her heart,” the page states. “She was intubated, then placed on a ventilator, and she is being kept heavily sedated to help her heal.”
The page also described Greger as a “lifetime friend” of Melissa Bilby, emphasizing the trust placed in her to care for the children.
During sentencing, Greger declined to address the court. According to the judgment order, “The Court inquired of the defendant if they had anything to say on their behalf prior to sentencing, or if there is any good and sufficient reason why sentence should not be pronounced, and the defendant stated they did not.”
Authorities said the investigation uncovered evidence suggesting an attempt to conceal what had happened, including washing the child’s clothing after the injuries were inflicted.
The case drew attention due to the severity of the injuries and the relationship between the victim’s family and the defendant, underscoring the circumstances under which the child was left in Greger’s care.
