Germantown man wins $30,000 in FAST PLAY Keno after four prize checks

GERMANTOWN, MD – A trip to buy scratch-offs turned into a $30,000 surprise for a Montgomery County man who needed four different confirmations before he finally believed he’d hit a top prize in the Maryland Lottery’s FAST PLAY Keno Edition game.

The retired IT worker was at Wisteria Beer and Wine with his daughter last week when he was persuaded by the cashier to try something new. Instead of his usual scratch-off tickets, he purchased a $3 FAST PLAY Keno Edition ticket—and unknowingly walked away a winner.

After glancing over the ticket, he wasn’t convinced he’d won anything. His daughter scanned it later, revealing a $30,000 prize. Still skeptical, the man showed it to his wife for a third opinion.

Even then, he wasn’t convinced. It wasn’t until he returned to the store to have the ticket officially verified that he accepted the win. He finally claimed the prize on Wednesday at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore, with his daughter by his side.

The Germantown resident, a father of three, said he plans to save part of the money and share some with his family. The retailer, Wisteria Beer and Wine at 13220 Wisteria Drive, will receive a $300 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

West New York man gets 45 years for beating his mother to death in 2021

WEST NEW YORK, NJ – A quiet afternoon on 66th Street turned into a grim crime scene when a 62-year-old woman was found dead in her bedroom, and now, nearly five years later, her son has been sentenced to spend the next four decades behind bars for her murder.

On Thursday, Emmanuel Gonzalez, 38, was sentenced to 45 years in New Jersey State Prison for the brutal 2021 killing of his mother, Irma Gonzalez. The ruling, handed down by Judge Angelo Servidio, follows Gonzalez’s conviction in January for murder. The sentence falls under the No Early Release Act, meaning he must serve at least 85 percent before becoming eligible for parole.

Police responded to the family’s West New York home on Thursday, January 14, 2021, around 1:30 p.m. after receiving a report of an unresponsive woman. Emmanuel Gonzalez met officers at the front door and led them to a bedroom where his mother was found lifeless.

Irma Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene. The Regional Medical Examiner later determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma and ruled it a homicide.

Following an investigation by law enforcement and prosecutors, Gonzalez was arrested and charged in connection with the killing. Prosecutors presented the case to a jury earlier this year, which returned a guilty verdict in January.

Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Nicole Ghezzar led the state’s case during the trial, culminating in Thursday’s sentencing.

Hagerstown woman wins $50K on first-ever Maryland Lottery ticket

Hagerstown, MD – A Washington County homemaker’s decision to play the Maryland Lottery for the first time led to a $50,000 windfall after she hit the top prize on a Bonus Match 5 ticket — with nothing more than a gut feeling.

The woman, whose name has not been released, picked up a quick-pick Bonus Match 5 ticket from Byers Stop ’N’ Go at 152 North Burhans Boulevard in Hagerstown for the July 31 drawing. She had never played the game — or any Maryland Lottery ticket — before.

After Saving $6 Million on Employee Health Coverage: Next Step is Shopping the Joint Insurance Fund

by Shore News Network September 19, 2025
By Shore News Network

By Mayor Daniel T. Rodrick

As the Mayor of Toms River, I firmly believe in the importance of fiscal responsibility and transparency in governance. Today, I want to share an important step we are taking to improve our town’s financial health and ensure better insurance coverage for our township: we are actively seeking new options to replace the JIF (Joint Insurance Fund) for General Liability, Property, Casualty, Worker Compensation, Employee and Environmental Liability insurance.

For decades, the Ocean County Joint Insurance Fund, managed by Connor Strong, has held a dominant position in the county’s insurance market. This monopoly has stifled competition, leaving municipalities like ours without viable alternatives as rates continued to climb by double-digit percentages each year.

As a member of the town council, I repeatedly urged the previous administration to explore alternative options for both the JIF and our employee health benefits plan, but those requests fell on deaf ears. When I took office, one of our first major actions was to leave Connor Strong behind and shop around for better health insurance options.

This decision has since proven fruitful, saving Toms River Township over $6 million to date. The significant savings we experienced from that decision demonstrates that exploring competitive options can yield transformative results. Inspired by that success, we are now setting our sights on the rest of our insurance. Our goal is clear: to secure a more cost-effective policy while also ensuring we have the appropriate coverage.

The reality is that Connor Strong, a politically connected firm, has enjoyed a virtual monopoly in Ocean County and beyond.

The JIF has been the source of many concerning news articles in the past few weeks:

  • NJ watchdog’s probe of public insurance funds alleges ‘covert takeover’ by private interests
  • New Jersey politicians silent on watchdog report detailing covert takeover of public insurance funds
  • Review Finds Local Governments’ Health Insurance Funds Have Conflicts of Interest and Public Contracting Violations
  • New Jersey Comptroller Flags Alleged Conflicts in Public Insurance Funds

This lack of competition can lead to complacency and inadequate service, a concern that has been highlighted by our difficulties in obtaining satisfactory coverage from the JIF, particularly in relation to two lawsuits filed against our town during the prior administration.

We believe our coverage limits for those lawsuits should be $4 Million, but the insurance company is trying to get away with offering just $1 Million in coverage, which is limiting our ability to settle these suits. We pay millions every year to the JIF, and now when it’s time for them to cover us, they want to leave us holding the bag.

These coverage issues not only place a financial burden on our municipality, but also jeopardize the interests of our residents. As we move forward with our search for new insurance solutions, we are also considering taking legal action for a declaratory judgment to confirm that the JIF upholds its obligation to provide coverage in these lawsuits.

This proactive approach underscores our commitment to ensuring that Toms River receives the support it deserves. By exploring new options for insurance coverage, I am hopeful that we will not only find substantial savings but also better protect our town’s interests.

This is not just about budgeting; it is about providing peace of mind to our residents, ensuring that they can rely on their local government to be responsible stewards of their tax dollars. I urge the community to stay engaged as we navigate this important process.

Together, we can move Toms River toward a future marked by financial prudence and robust support for all our residents. Sincerely, Daniel T. Rodrick Mayor of Toms River

HARTFORD, Conn. – A group of Connecticut House Republicans is pushing legislation to examine how much the state spends on services for undocumented immigrants.

Filed as Proposed Bill No. 5351 for the January session, the measure would create a working group tasked with studying both state and municipal costs tied to undocumented residents. That includes evaluating the expense of secondary language courses in schools, education services, and the impact on Medicaid coverage.

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Vincent Candelora (R-86), along with several Republican colleagues including Reps. Tom O’Dea, David Rutigliano, Tim Ackert, Jason Perillo, Lezlye Zupkus, Tami Zawistowski, and Devin Carney.

According to the statement of purpose, the goal is to gather data on “the cost of state services and programs provided to undocumented immigrants,” information lawmakers say would help shape budgetary decisions.

The proposal has been referred to the Appropriations Committee for consideration.

Key Points

  • Connecticut bill seeks to establish a working group to study cost of services for undocumented immigrants
  • Areas of focus include education, language programs, and Medicaid expenses
  • Measure introduced by House Republican leaders and referred to Appropriations Committee

Lawmakers now face debate over whether the state should tally the financial impact of services provided to undocumented residents.

Miles of backups hit Connecticut highways during Friday morning rush

By Shore News Network

HARTFORD, Conn. – Connecticut commuters face a slow Friday morning on major highways, with long stretches of congestion and road work piling onto delays.

As of 8:11 a.m., I-95 southbound traffic is crawling in two major sections: between Exits 18 and 11, covering six miles, and further south between Exits 10 and 5, stretching nearly five miles. A separate 2.1-mile jam builds between Exits 27A and 23.

On I-84, drivers heading eastbound see backups in two spots — four miles between Exits 30 and 32 and 3.4 miles between Exits 44 and 52. Westbound, road work between Exits 72 and 64 keeps the right shoulder closed through 3 p.m., slowing traffic over nearly 20 miles.

Delays also stack up on Route 15 southbound, where congestion runs five miles between Exits 17B and 10, and another 2.2 miles between Exits 32A and 29.

Officials continue to monitor heavy volume across the state as the morning commute unfolds.

  • I-84 has eastbound congestion and long westbound work-zone impacts until 3 p.m.
  • Route 15 southbound traffic clogs for more than seven miles in two sections

Connecticut’s Friday rush hour brings a maze of jams and road work for drivers heading into the weekend.

Several major New Jersey companies announce sweeping layoffs heading into fall

by Shore News Network September 19, 2025
By Shore News Network

Trenton, NJ – Some of New Jersey’s largest corporations are preparing to cut hundreds of jobs this fall, according to new state filings, raising concerns about the health of the Garden State’s workforce as the year closes out.

The job losses, reported through WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) notices, affect a wide range of industries — from pharmaceuticals and finance to retail and manufacturing — and will hit communities across the state in waves through the end of 2025 and into 2026.

Among the hardest hit is Bristol Myers Squibb, which will begin phasing out 282 positions at its Lawrence Township site starting in December and continuing into next spring. Novo Nordisk in Plainsboro is also planning a significant reduction, cutting 263 jobs by year’s end.

Other pharmaceutical and biotech employers are downsizing as well. Rocket Pharmaceuticals in Cranbury plans to eliminate 80 jobs by December, while Novartis in East Hanover will begin a series of phased cuts totaling 58 positions through mid-2026. BioReference Health, based in Elmwood Park, is slashing more than 170 jobs across two separate rounds of layoffs.

The financial sector is also being hit. Citibank in Jersey City will shed 52 jobs across multiple dates this fall, while JPMorgan Chase plans to cut 58 positions in November. Valley National Bank in Morristown has already begun reducing 59 jobs. Prudential in Newark will cut 63 jobs between November and December, and Ernst & Young is laying off 130 employees across Hudson and Middlesex Counties.

Retail and consumer businesses are not spared. Claire’s Boutiques Inc. is closing or downsizing across multiple counties, eliminating 155 jobs statewide. Spiral Binding in Totowa is cutting 137 workers, and Mark Anthony Brewing in Hillside is laying off 143.

Transportation and logistics are also feeling the pinch. Alstom Transportation in Camden is cutting 121 jobs, while Essendant in Cranbury is planning 171 layoffs.

The timing of the layoffs — many scheduled before the holidays — is expected to ripple through local economies, particularly in regions reliant on major corporate employers.

Key Points

  • Pharmaceutical giants Bristol Myers Squibb and Novo Nordisk are cutting a combined 545 jobs.
  • Major banks including Citi, JPMorgan, and Prudential are reducing staff across North Jersey.
  • Retailers and manufacturers such as Claire’s, Spiral Binding, and Mark Anthony Brewing are also planning significant layoffs.

With multiple industries cutting staff, the next several months could be among the toughest for New Jersey workers in recent years.

She’s the Kamala of New Jersey: Democratic voters grow restless as Mikie Sherrill’s campaign struggles to energize base

by Shore News Network September 18, 2025
By Shore News Network

Newark, NJ – Democratic voters across New Jersey are voicing frustration with Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s campaign for governor, saying the race feels flat and uninspired at a time when polls show her in a tight contest with Republican rival Jack Ciattarelli.

Sherrill, a four-term congresswoman from North Jersey, has long been considered the establishment favorite. But many Democrats say her campaign lacks energy, visibility, and a clear message that connects with everyday concerns.

Some voters point to recent polling, which shows the race effectively tied, as a warning sign that the campaign is not resonating. Others have criticized Sherrill’s reluctance to respond to constituents or take bold positions, with several supporters saying they have struggled to get responses from her campaign.

The dissatisfaction also stems from the Democratic primary, where progressive voters were split between Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop. Several Democrats now argue that if one of them had stepped aside, a stronger challenger to Sherrill might have emerged. Instead, Sherrill won with a plurality, leaving many progressives unenthusiastic heading into November.

Her absence from key community events has further fueled criticism. Ciattarelli has made himself visible at cultural parades and local gatherings, while Sherrill’s limited presence has left some voters questioning her outreach strategy. “Name recognition” from these events, they say, could sway undecided voters.

Some Democrats worry that the campaign’s tone mirrors the party’s broader struggles at the national level, where voters hear warnings about threats to democracy but little in the way of aspirational policy. Frustrated Democrats argue that Sherrill is not doing enough to draw a contrast with her opponent or to energize younger and more progressive voters.

Others flat out said in a reddit threat that she is the Kamala Harris of this election, but, “We still need to support her.”

Despite the criticism, Sherrill retains strong support from party leadership, who believe her military background and record in Congress make her a formidable general election candidate. But with time running down and enthusiasm lagging, Democrats acknowledge the risk of complacency in a race that could decide control of the State House.

Key Points

  • Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s gubernatorial campaign has drawn criticism from Democrats who feel uninspired and overlooked.
  • Polls show a close race with Republican Jack Ciattarelli, raising concerns about turnout.
  • Progressive Democrats remain divided after a primary split between Ras Baraka and Steven Fulop.

With Election Day approaching, Sherrill faces mounting pressure to rally her base before it’s too late.
