People in These New Jersey Cities Have More Bad Hair Days Than Others According to New Report

VINELAND, N.J. – A new environmental study has named Vineland the most damaging place in New Jersey for your hair, revealing how local climate and water quality can quietly sabotage hair health across the Garden State.

Hair transplant specialist Dr. Terziler analyzed data from the state’s largest cities and census-designated places, comparing five environmental factors known to impact hair: humidity, UV radiation, sunshine hours, wind speed, and water hardness. Each area received an index score out of 100, with higher scores indicating harsher conditions for maintaining healthy hair.

Vineland earned the highest score at 52.97, making it the most challenging environment for hair in the state. The city’s high humidity levels—averaging 67.26% daily—combine with strong solar radiation and steady winds to create conditions that can lead to frizz, dryness, and breakage. Trenton followed closely with a score of 52.17, largely due to elevated water hardness levels reaching 222 parts per million.

Bayonne, Camden, and Elizabeth rounded out the top five, each affected by a mix of humidity and sun exposure that contributes to daily hair stress. Even northern cities like Newark, Passaic, and Paterson made the list, though they fared slightly better due to lower radiation and wind readings.

Dr. Terziler emphasized that environmental stressors are often overlooked in hair care routines. “High humidity can cause the hair shaft to swell, lifting the cuticle and leading to frizz and breakage,” he explained. “UV radiation and long sunshine hours damage the hair’s protein structure, while wind and hard water further weaken and dry the strands.”

He added that proper care can offset these effects. Protective styles, UV-shielding sprays, and chelating shampoos can help residents of high-risk cities maintain stronger, healthier hair. “Your location matters more than you think,” Terziler said. “Adjusting your routine to your environment is key to preserving your hair’s natural strength and shine.”
