TURTLE CREEK, Pa. – One person was critically injured and two others were hospitalized in stable condition Friday after a City of Pittsburgh garbage truck was involved in a four-vehicle crash in Turtle Creek, according to Allegheny County Police.
County 911 received the call at 12:28 p.m. for a crash in the 100 block of Monroeville Avenue. First responders found three occupied vehicles involved in the collision along with an unoccupied vehicle, police said.
- Three people were taken to area hospitals, including one person listed in critical condition and two in stable condition.
- Police say the Pittsburgh garbage truck struck the rear of a Mitsubishi Mirage stopped at a red light before continuing through the intersection and hitting a Chevrolet Colorado.
- A tire separated from the Chevrolet and struck an unoccupied Turtle Creek police vehicle, according to investigators.
Detectives with the Allegheny County Police Department’s Homicide Unit responded to assist local authorities, while the department’s collision reconstruction investigators began working to determine what caused the crash.
Garbage Truck Struck Car Stopped at Red Light, Police Say
Preliminary information indicates the garbage truck was traveling east on the Tri-Boro Expressway when it approached the intersection with Grant Street.
Police said the truck struck the rear of a Mitsubishi Mirage that was stopped at the red light.
The garbage truck then continued through the intersection and collided with a Chevrolet Colorado before overturning onto its side, according to investigators.
The impact also sent debris into a nearby police vehicle.
“A tire was disconnected from the Chevy Colorado and struck an unoccupied Turtle Creek police car,” Allegheny County Police said in its preliminary account.
Because the police vehicle was unoccupied, no officer was reported injured as a result of that impact.
Three Hospitalized as Crash Investigation Begins
Emergency crews transported three people from the scene to area hospitals. Police said one was in critical condition while the other two were in stable condition.
Authorities did not identify the injured people or specify which vehicles they occupied.
The Allegheny County Police Department Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the sequence of events and working to determine why the garbage truck struck the stopped vehicle.
