Police Down the Shore Continue Search for Man Feared to Have Jumped from Route 72 Bridge

STAFFORD TOWNSHIP, NJ – Recovery teams are continuing to search coastal waters for a missing man as poor weather and dangerous conditions hamper operations. Police found the man’s car on the bridge on Tuesday and have been searching for him since.

Police said the car belongs to a 19-year-old man from Monmouth County.

Police said efforts have been ongoing since late Wednesday night, but strong winds, heavy rain, and limited visibility slowed progress overnight.

Authorities resumed the search early Thursday with assistance from multiple regional and state agencies.

The operation remains focused on waters affected by rapidly changing tides, fast currents, and cold temperatures that have made recovery conditions challenging.

Multiple agencies assist in difficult search conditions

The Stafford Township Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police Marine Unit, Barnegat Township Police Marine Unit, Seaside Heights Fire Department, and West Tuckerton Fire Department Dive Team are all participating in the search.

Local officers have also deployed personal vessels to aid in coverage of the area.

No indication of criminal activity, police say

According to police, the investigation remains active but has found no evidence suggesting foul play or criminal involvement.

Officials said the primary focus remains on recovery efforts and ensuring responder safety given the current weather and water conditions.
