Police seek suspect in East Harlem hate crime robbery

MANHATTAN, NY – Detectives are asking for the public’s help identifying a suspect wanted for a robbery and assault in East Harlem that police are investigating as a hate crime. The incident occurred Thursday night, January 8, around 9:50 p.m. near East 116th Street and 3rd Avenue, within the 25th Precinct.

According to the NYPD, a 31-year-old man was approached by an unidentified individual after he made anti-Hispanic remarks. The assailant then punched and kicked the victim before forcibly taking his wallet, which contained approximately $200 in cash along with personal items, police said. The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived.

The victim sustained injuries but declined medical attention at the scene. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and working with the department’s Hate Crimes Task Force to identify the person responsible.
