CALIFORNIA, Md. — A retired St. Mary’s County man searching for a short Racetrax line walked into a Southern Maryland liquor store hoping to make a quick lottery play — and walked out with a scratch-off ticket worth $50K instead.
The longtime Maryland Lottery player claimed the prize Wednesday at Maryland Lottery headquarters after winning on a 20X the Cash scratch-off ticket purchased at ABC Liquors, located at 22741 Three Notch Road in California, Maryland.
According to lottery officials, the winner regularly plays Racetrax and Keno games each week but occasionally buys scratch-offs for a change of pace.
That change paid off in a major way.

The retiree said he spent time driving between stores searching for a shorter line so he could quickly place a Racetrax wager. After stopping at ABC Liquors, he became impatient while waiting and decided to switch plans entirely.
Instead of playing Racetrax, the man purchased four 20X the Cash scratch-off tickets for $5 each.
He scratched and scanned the tickets inside the store and noticed one displayed the message “Take to Lottery.” Unsure what the message meant, he asked the retailer to verify the ticket.
That was the moment he learned he had won $50,000.
“I felt good hearing that,” the winner told Maryland Lottery officials.

The recent retiree said the unexpected payout comes at the perfect time and plans to use the money to help pay off the remaining balance on his mortgage.
Lottery officials said the 20X the Cash game launched in January with seven top prizes worth $50,000. Following this latest claim, three top prizes remain unclaimed.
ABC Liquors will also receive a $500 retailer bonus for selling the winning ticket.
