National Guard members detained one suspect while another vanished with the stolen moped

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man sitting on his moped along a busy Northwest Washington corridor was suddenly attacked by two suspects Monday night, setting off a violent street confrontation that ended with one arrest, a stolen scooter, and a second suspect still on the run.

The incident unfolded at approximately 8:07 p.m. in the 1900 block of 9th Street Northwest, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Investigators said the victim was sitting on his moped when two suspects approached him. During the encounter, one suspect allegedly engaged the victim in a physical fight while the second suspect fled the scene on the victim’s moped along with the victim’s property.

As the struggle continued on the street, members of the National Guard intervened and stopped the suspect accused of assaulting the victim until MPD officers arrived.

Police identified the arrested suspect as 34-year-old Deangelo Williams of Northwest Washington. He was charged with unarmed carjacking.

Authorities said the second suspect who fled on the stolen moped has not yet been identified, and the investigation remains active.

The Metropolitan Police Department said a reward of up to $1,000 is available for information leading to the arrest and indictment of individuals responsible for crimes committed in the District of Columbia.
