Police say the killing was domestic in nature and an arrest followed the investigation
WASHINGTON, DC – An 81-year-old man was found dead with visible injuries inside a Northeast DC home Sunday morning, and police have arrested a 63-year-old woman on a second-degree murder charge in what investigators described as a domestic case.
The Metropolitan Police Department identified the victim as John Wesley Knight Jr., 81, of Northeast DC.
Sherry Lou Sanders, 63, also of Northeast DC, was charged with second-degree murder.
Officers find 81-year-old man dead inside home
Fifth District officers were called to the 200 block of K Street NE at approximately 8:27 a.m. Sunday following a report of an unconscious person.
Officers entered the residence and found Knight unconscious, not breathing and suffering from visible injuries, according to MPD.
DC Fire and EMS responded and pronounced Knight dead at the scene after finding no signs of life.
His body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
Police call case domestic in nature
MPD said investigators developed probable cause for an arrest based on evidence gathered during the scene investigation.
Police described the homicide as domestic in nature but did not provide additional information about the circumstances surrounding Knight’s death or specify the relationship between Knight and Sanders.
Sanders was subsequently charged with second-degree murder.
MPD did not disclose further details about the injuries Knight suffered in Tuesday’s announcement.
The charge is an accusation, and Sanders is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
