Police say the masked suspect rode off on the stolen bike along Court Street

NEWARK, NJ – A $2,500 e-bike disappeared from behind the lobby of a Newark apartment complex while its owner was visiting relatives, and surveillance video captured a masked suspect taking the bike and fleeing along Court Street, according to city public safety officials.

The theft occurred July 31 in the 100 block of Court Street.

The victim had parked the e-bike at approximately 8 p.m. the previous evening and discovered it missing when he returned the next day.

Surveillance camera captures theft

Newark police said surveillance footage showed a man taking the e-bike at approximately 8:06 a.m.

The suspect then fled eastbound on Court Street with the bike.

Police described the man as having a thin build and wearing black clothing, a black ski mask and a black backpack.

Authorities released surveillance images in an effort to identify him.

Police ask for help identifying suspect

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. is asking anyone who recognizes the suspect or has information about the theft to contact investigators.

Tips can be submitted anonymously through the Newark Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS, or 1-877-695-8477.

Police said anonymous tips are confidential and could result in a reward.

No arrest was announced in connection with the theft.
