Bullets struck property in Northwest DC before police and National Guard members located the fleeing suspect
WASHINGTON, DC – Gunshots erupted along Columbia Road in Northwest DC Thursday evening, striking property and sending a suspect fleeing on foot before police, assisted by National Guard members, located an 18-year-old who was arrested and now faces a lengthy list of firearm charges.
The Metropolitan Police Department said Third District officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Columbia Road NW at approximately 6:59 p.m. after receiving a report of gunfire.
No injuries were reported.
Gunshots strike property on Columbia Road
MPD said a suspect discharged a firearm, with the gunfire striking property.
The suspect then fled from the area on foot.
Responding MPD officers and members of the National Guard located the suspect shortly afterward, according to police.
The department said the suspect was taken into custody without incident and a firearm was recovered.
18-year-old faces nine charges
Police identified the arrested man as Jude Gayden, 18, of Northeast DC.
Gayden was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon involving a gun, felony destruction of property, unlawful discarding of firearms or ammunition and carrying a pistol without a license.
He also faces charges of possession of a large-capacity ammunition feeding device, possession of an unregistered firearm, possession of unregistered ammunition, endangerment with a firearm and unlawful discharge of a firearm.
Police reported no injuries stemming from the gunfire.
The charges are accusations, and Gayden is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
