A large police response was triggered after multiple 911 callers reported possible gunfire at Beth Medrash Govoha, but officers determined the sounds came from construction equipment and found no threat.

Lakewood, NJ – A reported active threat at Beth Medrash Govoha, the nation’s largest yeshiva, prompted a massive police response Wednesday after multiple 911 callers reported hearing what they believed was gunfire on campus.

According to the Lakewood Police Department, officers were dispatched just before noon after several callers reported possible gunfire and people running from the BMG campus. Officers from every division of the department responded immediately, entered the buildings, and began systematically searching the campus while securing the area.

BMG is hailed as the largest Jewish religious higher education institution in America.

Investigation found no active threat

As officers investigated, they determined the sounds mistaken for gunfire were likely produced by a construction worker operating equipment on the campus. Police searched every building out of an abundance of caution and found no evidence of a threat.

Authorities said the campus was determined to be safe, and at no time were students, staff, visitors, or nearby residents in danger.

Police emphasize importance of emergency calls

“Our officers responded immediately and treated this incident as though it were a real and active threat,” Police Chief Gregory Meyer said. “While we are thankful that the sounds were ultimately determined not to be gunfire, our first priority will always be the safety of our community.”

Meyer also thanked those affected for their patience and cooperation during the response. The department reminded residents to call 911 whenever they see or hear something that raises concern, noting that prompt reporting allows first responders to quickly assess potential threats.

Why it matters

Incidents involving reports of possible gunfire at schools and large public institutions require an immediate law enforcement response, even when they ultimately prove unfounded. Police said the swift search of the campus ensured the safety of thousands of students and staff before normal activities resumed.
