Surveillance footage helped detectives identify the 34-year-old wanted on attempted murder charges
SILVER SPRING, MD – A trip into the men’s restroom at The Angry Jerk turned into a violent encounter when a man was stabbed multiple times and left with life-threatening injuries, with a monthlong investigation ending in the arrest of 34-year-old Mark Reginald Melton in Washington, DC, according to Montgomery County Police.
The stabbing occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. July 10 at The Angry Jerk in the 8200 block of Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.
Investigators said Melton entered the men’s restroom at approximately 10:34 p.m. and stabbed the victim multiple times before leaving the business.
The wounded man was taken to an area hospital with injuries described by police as life-threatening.
Detectives investigating the attack reviewed surveillance footage from the business and developed a description of the person they believed was responsible.
The investigation ultimately led detectives to identify Melton, who police said has no fixed address.
An arrest warrant was obtained charging Melton with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and related offenses.
The search for Melton eventually extended into Washington, DC.
Members of the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Task Force arrested him there, according to Montgomery County Police.
Melton was subsequently transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.
He is being held without bond.
Police did not provide information concerning what may have preceded the stabbing or whether Melton and the victim knew each other.
The charges against Melton remain allegations and have not been proven in court.
