A change of plans in Fallston delivered a seven-figure payday
FALLSTON, MD — Forgetting to buy his usual lottery tickets at Walmart sent a retired Baltimore City police officer to another Fallston store — and that change in routine ended with a $1 million Powerball win he initially did not realize was worth seven figures.
The Kingsville resident purchased five Powerball Quick Pick combinations at Harvest Fare, 2315 Belair Road in Fallston, for the Aug. 10 drawing, according to the Maryland Lottery.
He matched all five white balls but missed the red Powerball, securing Powerball’s $1 million second-tier prize.
The retired officer told Lottery officials that he plays fairly regularly and typically purchases his tickets at the Walmart in Fallston.
While shopping there Aug. 9, however, he forgot to buy his Powerball tickets.
That oversight led him to the nearby Harvest Fare, where he purchased the five Quick Picks that would change his plans.
The following day, he was sitting in his car when he checked the ticket.
At first, he did not notice all of the matching numbers and believed he had won a smaller prize.
He then showed the ticket to his daughter.
She checked it and delivered the news: the ticket was worth $1 million.
The Maryland Lottery said the retired officer was shocked to discover his prize was substantially larger than he initially believed.
He plans to use the winnings to pay bills, including expenses related to a recreational vehicle he recently purchased.
A holiday trip to Florida is also planned.
Although retired from police work, the winner continues to work part time to stay active, according to the Lottery. He also enjoys diamond-dot painting.
Harvest Fare will receive a $2,500 bonus for selling the $1 million second-tier Powerball ticket.
